Tenerife Beaches

While years ago black volcanic sand natural beaches were the norm, today there are some great golden ones, especially in and around the popular tourist destinations of the south.

This is thanks to man-made or at least man-adapted beaches. For just a short distance from Tenerife there is golden sand in abundance – the Sahara! Having been transported to the island the new golden beaches are protected from being washed away by tidal action thanks, to the creation of breakwater barriers.

While there are many small, off the beaten track beaches across the island, some of the larger ones include:

Costa Adeje: Beautiful golden beaches, including Fanabe and Playa de las Americas. Although these beaches are created, they are attractive and very clean with an abundance of shops, cafes and bars close by.

Playa del Medano: A superb beach which is full of visual action due to the trade winds creating ideal conditions for windsurfers. The beach is very flat and so a good location for children to play.

Playa de los Cristianos: Regarded by many as the best beach on the island due to its stretch of golden sand with great views and fully serviced with refreshments on hand, plus shops, bars and restaurants close by.

Playa Jardin: Situated to the west of Puerto de la Cruz this beach is a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming in the North West of the island. The beach which has black sand is attractively lined with palms.

Playa de las Teresitas: Just to the north of Santa Cruz is a lovely golden beach, sheltered by palms.
