Tenerife Sightseeing
While sunbathing will be high on most people's holiday list of priorities, allocate some time to experiencing just what a remarkable island Tenerife is. It is not called the 'Island of contrasts' for nothing. Just compare the following sightseeing experiences.
Firstly a trip to the spectacular Mount Teide, Europe's highest dormant volcano at over 1200 feet is really not to be missed. On a clear day a cable car ride up Teide affords quite the most remarkable views. The stunning lunar landscape inside the Caldera de Las Cañadas is where such movies as Clash of the Titans, Planet of the Apes, Star Wars and The Ten Commandments were filmed.
Contrast this with a stunning drive through the Oratava Valley with its rich tropical fruit plantations and botanical gardens. Much of Tenerife’s early history is also associated with this area of the island.
Another sight well worth a visit is the mysterious Güímar pyramids which have been the subject of much debate since their discovery in 1991. These step pyramids are similar to others in Mexico and Peru.
Even if not staying in Puerto de la Cruz, a visit to this area will be worth it for two special attractions. The first is the Botanic gardens which have some spectacular varieties of cacti and other exotic flora.
The gardens are situated on the outskirts of Puerto, where another attraction worthy of note is also based – the amazing Loro Parque. Home to not only the largest single collection of parrots in the world, but also a vast collection of orchids plus some tigers and dolphins thrown in for good measure!
